Healthy and Nourishing Ramadan

Healthy and Nourishing Ramadan By Umme Muhammad
Be prepared

Naila picked up her list of groceries and other necessary items to be collected from the nearby mall in preparation of Ramadan. As they proceeded their trolley was full and almost overflowed her nine year old asked “Mom, Isn’t Ramadan a month of fasting?? So with all this stuff will we ever be hungry”

Plan OUT

Her mother was left pondering. Then she thought over and replied. “All this stuff is for a month, so that I do not go out of stock in mid Ramadan and waste my time shopping. Also I collected things to be given in charity to others, if we won’t give the poor necessary grocery how will they break their fast?”Explained Naila. “ See this is a list of things to be cooked this month to prevent wastage of time thinking what to cook today”

Purpose of Ramadan

“Subhnallah I am glad to have such an organized mom, but how will we feed our soul, what plans for the real purpose of Ramadan our teacher said that the Quran says Oh you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you many learn piety and righteousness" (Q 2:183)” “ I am glad my daughter is growing wiser.” Everyday inshaAllah we will read one juz of the Quran, then the same we will listen the recitation online of Qari Sudais then we will read its tafsir to feed our hungry soul.”

Quran was revealed in Ramadan

Do you know Allah revealed the Quran in Ramadan "Indeed We have revealed it (Qur'an) in the night of Power.Ch97 v1 and it is guidance for all mankind Quran says The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. Ch 2 V185. Also the first battle of badr was fought in Ramadan It means we should invite people towards Islam through Quran which is the criterion and there are many other things to do in Ramadan also in the same verse it continues ‘to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you;and perhaps you will be grateful.’

Practice Quran in our Daily lives

Allah wants us to glorify Him and be grateful for being blessed with the biggest favor of not only Islam but also Ramadan and Quran and the proof that we are grateful for it will be shown in our deeds. How much we practice Islam and Quran in our daily lives not only in Ramadan but also throughout the year. Lots of Voluntary deeds, Zikr and abstaining from bad deeds and sins is the main aspect of fasting . Fighting the nafs, our well built ego and desires.

Character Building

· Fasting builds our character as Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saidFasting is a shield; so when one of you is fasting he should neither indulge in obscene language nor should he raise his voice in anger. If someone attacks him or insults him, let him say: "I am fasting!" (Muslim)
Eating Tips
“But, Mamma what about food?” quipped the nine year old . “Sure Allah has permitted us to break our fast after sunset”. Naila smiled and continued “Allah says We should eat of what Allah has given you, lawful and good (things), and give thanks for Allah’s favor Chapter: 16 , Verse: 114 but we should not exceed limits means over indulgence in eating or wasting food as an ayah says in 17- Chapter: 7 , Verse: 31 o children of adam! attend to your embellishments at every time of prayer, and eat and drink and be not extravagant; surely he does not love the extravagant. So we should eat healthy foods required drinks to help us be able to establish salah and other chores without losing energy.

EAT SMART

Our Body is a Blessing from Allah and we must treat it in the best way. Eat to the point you are NOT hungry. Don’t eat to the point of being full. Eat healthy and smart, exercise with salah, Early to bed and early to rise, and stress management. Eating well helps decreases health hazards and cancer by 50%.
On the authority of Al-Miqdaam ibn Maadiy-Karib who said: I heard the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying: “No human ever filled a vessel worse than the stomach. Sufficient for any son of Adam are some morsels to keep his back straight. But if it must be, then one third for his food, one third for his drink and one third for his breath.” [Ahmad, At-Tirmidhi, An-Nasaa'I, Ibn Majah – Hadith sahih]

Last but not the least CHANGE

“I understood everything, but what should we do after Ramadan?” asked Sarah looking puzzled. “Change inshaAllah , we need to change like every footballer prepares before appearing for his country, we too need to train ourselves through controlling our desires and worshipping Allah so our aim should be getting close to Allah , Closer to the Quran and Sunnah , and close to Islam.” Answered Naila kissing Sarah on her forehead. “InshaAllah’ nourishment not only of body but also soul
