'Why! What are you crying about, Umar?'
Umar RA entered the room where the Blessed Prophet was resting. He first greeted the Blessed Prophet 'Peace be with you.'
'And with you be peace,' replied the Blessed Prophet
Umar RA sat down on the floor and began to notice the room for the first time. There was no bed in the room. The Blessed Prophet was lying on a mat. Part of his body was on the floor and part on the mat. The mat was rough and the floor hard. The marks from the mat were visible on his body. He was wearing a garment of rough and coarse cloth. He had a pillow, but the pillow was filled with prickly leaves from a palm tree. There was nothing else in the room, no wardrobe, no rich food to eat, no comfortable mattresses. Instead, in a corner were some berry leaves and a small heap of barley, over which an untreated piece of leather was hanging.
Tears began to well up in Umar's eyes. When the Blessed Prophet saw Umar crying he asked him, 'Why! What are you crying about, Umar?' Umar RA answered in a bittervoice, 'And why shouldn't I cry, O Prophet of Allah? I see your bedding and the marks from the mat on your back; I see all your belongings which amount to nothing, and yet you are the Prophet of Allah and His chosen Messenger! The emperors of the Byzantine and the Persian empires are living in luxury and comfort. Their thrones are made of gold and their clothing and bedding are made of the finest silks'. Umar waved his arm to illustrate. 'And this is all you have - this is your treasure.'
The Blessed Prophet smiled and looked kindly and affectionately at Umar. 'Are you not happy, O Umar that we shall receive our riches and treasures and comforts in the eternal life. The kings of this world have received their full share here, and even this share is going to be useless for them as soon as they depart from this world. Our share is to come later, but once we receive it, it will remain with us forever.'
(BUKHARI and Muslim)
Hadrat 'AbdAllah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says that (once) the Holy Prophet (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) slept on a mat made of date palm leaves and when he awoke, the impressions of the mat were visible on his body. We said: "O Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him)! May we prepare a soft bedding for you?" He said: I have got nothing to do with the world. I am in this world like a rider who halts in the shade of a tree for a short time and after taking some rest, resumes his journey leaving the tree behind. (Tirmidhi)
The Prophet Sallalahu Alayhi Wasalam would sleep in a room made of mud. His roof was made of branches from palm trees. Extreme hunger often forced him to tie two stones around his stomach, in order to alleviate the pangs of hunger. His mattress was the branch of a date-palm tree which would give him pains in his sides. He had to leave his armour with a Jew as collateral for thirty measures of wheat, until he would be able to pay him back. He would go three days straight without finding so much as a rotten date to eat.
Reports the mother of faithful believers, Sayyidatina 'Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her): "At our home (that is, the home of the Holy Prophet's household), fire would not be kindled (sometimes) for a whole month; we subsisted merely on water and dates." (Tirmidhi)
Hadrat Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) and the members of his household used to pass night after night without food, as there used to be nothing for eating at night, and frequently his food consisted of barley-bread. (Tirmidhi)
Sayyidatina 'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reports that till the day the Holy Prophet passed away, the members of his household did not eat even barley-bread to their fill for two days consecutively. (Tirmidhi)
Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says in the Quran:
….وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِي…
“...I have completed my favour upon you...” Surah Al-Maidah – Ayah 3.
After reading this verse, you should ask yourself this question:
What blessing was complete for the Prophet Sallalahu Alayhi Wasalam? Was it material wealth? Was it the possession of castles, mansions, gold, or silver? It is none of these blessings that Allah is referring to, since the Prophet Sallalahu Alayhi Wasalam was not wealthy. But He was Thankful of His Creator and stood at nights praising Him and also praying for the Ummah Ya RAbbi Ummati Ummati!!
وَلَلآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لَكَ مِنَ الأولَى
وَلَسَوْفَ يُعْطِيكَ رَبُّكَ فَتَرْضَى
“And indeed the Hereafter is better for you than the present [life of this world]. And verily your Lord will give you [all i.e. good] so that you shall be well-pleased.” Surah Ad-Duha – Ayahs 4-5.
